Welsh Stick Chair
About: This chunky, heavily worn low chair hails from Wales and is considered a class of chairmaking called “stick chairs” for their primitive and utilitarian nature. They were often constructed of less desirable and discarded “hedgerow” timber, often made by local carpenters, wheelwrights and coffin makers. This example may date to the 16th century or earlier based on the naive nature and heavy ageing. The wood is likely elm.
Why We Love It: A Welsh classic and very early one at that too! Just imagine what this chair has seen in its existence. We can imagine this chair propping up its sitter alongside a stone hearth during those long, cold, grey UK winters. Truly one of a kind.
Condition: Gnarly! Lots of patina and very sturdy. Chair back rail shows one area of dry rot (last image).
Dims: 23” Wide x 16.5” Deep x 24.5” Back Height. 13” Seat Height
Location: Sperryville, VA
