Tramp Art Chest of Drawers & Vanity Mirror

About: This is a spectacularly large & well preserved period chip carved tramp art chest of drawers with tilting vanity mirror. The entirety of the case and drawers are assembled from reused crates of varying identity (old label remnants present) with each surface purposely carved at the edges in classic tramp art fashion. We believe this piece dates to the mid to later cycle of the tramp art craze, c.1905 or so.

The cabinet features three drawers, each with two pull knobs and butt nailed drawer boxes. The mirror swivels and is supported by further carved details. The sides, drawer fronts and mirror surround are enhanced with stacked layers of chip carved panels.

Some of the original crate labels include: “Most Excellent Cream * Waffers” , “Robert Hill Crown Brand, NYC” , and “Neversink Distilling of Lorane, Berks County, PA”. Given the labels we expect this piece to hail from the PA / NY area. We collected this in southern VA.

Why We Love It: The patina and state of preservation, the scale and proportion and overall presence are just spectacular. And, at 31” tall, this is one of the larger chest / vanity types we’ve seen. This piece would be a jewel in any folk or tramp art collection.

Condition: Fairly immaculate with only one missing tiny last stepped piece to the lower drawer (last image). The cabinet is sturdy and the drawers & mirror move freely. The mirror is cloudy given it’s age.

Dims: 30” Tall x 15.5” Wide x 9.5” deep

Location: Sperryville, VA
