Portrait of a Lady in Mourning

$695.00

About: The is a late 19th Century portrait of a young woman in mourning: her black shawl and bonnet notable while her face flanked with pink roses. She’s painted on old panel marked “Muller, Paris” and is finished in a rich beaded gilt frame.

The image is likely a later overpaint or the piece has been well cleaned. The colors are bright and vivid while the image is detailed and crisp.

Why We Love It: Her face is hopeful but eyes yearning. We fell in love with her the minute we saw her, despite the painting looking “fresh” for its age. Unsigned though by the hand of a very skilled artist.

Condition: The board and painting are in excellent condition though there appears to be in-painting to the upper left corner (last image). The gilt frame shows some wear and minor chips.

Dims: Framed: 20” Tall x 17” Wide

Location: Sperryville, VA
