Period Floral Oil on Panel

$145.00

About: This is an 18th (perhaps early 18th) Century oil on panel still life of flowers in a wire basket, likely from France. The woods used are lighter in weight indicating a continental heritage while the subject matter is decidedly French.

The subject is painted on a solid panel in matching gilt frame. It appears that neither the panel nor frame have ever been disturbed. The original nails and hanging hardware are intact though the hanger’s screw appears a but more recent.

Why We Love It: We LOVE seeing the passage of time evidenced in un-fooled-around-with pieces. It’s a glimpse into the past. This sweet little piece is a bit dark & moody yet colorful. The splitting panel and orange peel texture paint are just the right amount of patina.

Condition: The solid panel has cupped and cracked/split in two vertical places though the splits do not telegraph through to the front so there are no gaps. The frame has a mild split to one of the joints (fourth image).

Dims: Frame is 13.5” diameter with 9.75” diameter visible.

Location: Sperryville, VA
