Painted Wooden Box

$295.00

About: This is a painted storage box, long ago repurposed from an up-cycled wooden crate and retaining numerous layers of paint. The last paint iteration includes delicate pin-striping-thin motifs that are perhaps PA dutch or English Arts & Crafts on a red field. Collected in PA.

Below the red paint are remnants of the box’s original incarnation, perhaps as a dynamite or tool crate of some sort. The markings underneath the paint are evident but we’re having a hard time discerning exactly what they say. The underside of the lid is marked “53 POUNDS”.

Why We Love It: Witchy! That’s how we’re describing the painted borders and flourishes, for lack of better term. The box has patina for days and has definitely seen several generations of use. The scale is better than that of a jewelry box and provides storage for larger objects while having a primitive….and witchy…vibe.

Condition: Lots of dents and dings. Hinges have been moved long ago and the lid’s underside paint has chipped away but is stable. The underside is hand painted, “Dec 20, 1890.

Dims: 14.5” Long x 11.5” Wide x 12” Tall

Location: Sperryville, VA
