About: This highly detailed beauty is a Gothic revival (late 18th Century) leather playing card box, with tooled figural relief, stylized foliate motifs, medieval style metal hinged straps and a divided tan suede fitted for two decks. Likely French.
Why We Love It: This piece is incredibly detailed and features medieval style depictions of a queen, bards and a knight. The queen gestures to a shield with the four card suits: hearts, clubs, diamonds and spades which retain a bit of red color. The imagery is intense. Lots of fleu-de-lis. The skill required to emboss and deboss these scenes into leather is as equally as intense.
Dims: 8” W x 5” D x 2.5” H
Condition: Given the age of the box we’d expect it to be in far worse condition but this is a survivor…and a delicate piece. One hinge has come loose though there are no breaks or repairs evident. There is some warping to the front panel as shown.
Location: Sperryville, VA
