Naive Painted Jelly Cupboard

About: This a fantastically naive painted one door storage cabinet or jelly cupboard in greens and greys. The cabinet case dates to around 1850 (rosette nails) while the door is likely an addition circa 1920s (steel screw construction). The green faux grain painting likely dates to c. 1940s. All exterior visible surfaces have been painted in sponge and brush techniques.

The cabinet is constructed of thick tongue and groove planks and retains its original Victorian era latch with porcelain knob and steel hinges. The interior shows three fixed shelves providing excellent storage (for all of your jellies).

Why We Love It: This cabinet has become quite the conversation piece and it always will no matter where it finds itself. Some people get it, some don’t. We love it for being graphically striking and contemporary, able to hold a room on its own, while at the same time being a relic from the past. This piece would look fantastic with its own wall and sparsely decorated, giving it room to breath.

Condition: The finish and structure are are sound and the entire piece is full of everything you’d expect from a great primitive cabinet: chips, scuffs and wear patterns here and there. The interior remains unpainted and dry. This is a very sturdy piece.

Dims: 39 in Long. 15 in deep. 49 in tall. 12 in between shelves.

Location: Sperryville, VA
