Early Southern Painted Blanket Box

Sold

About: This early 1800s pine blanket box is completely painted in green stars, stylized primitive foliage and bold border all on a red field. The simple butt joint construction is held together with rosette head nails with a majority of the panels being single width boards.

Purchased in Virginia from a Tennessee family.

Why We Love It: This is a good one!!! The rosette head nails give us clues as to its age while the pine is distinctly southern. The primitive painted decor puts it over the top. Oh the stories it could tell.

Condition: She’s seen better days for sure (you would too if you were 200+ years old) but the painted sides remain visually vibrant and honest. The top has some large areas of wear and paint loss. The entire box is full of chips, worm holes and some splitting to the wood panels. Hinges are more recent and as found. Sturdy but old.

Dims: 31” W x 16” D x 13” H

Location: Sperryville, VA
