Large Early Blown Glass Ribbed Bottle

$0.00
Sold

About: The is an exceptionally large mouth blown clear glass decanter, likely for serving wine (large amounts of wine). The bulbous form is shaped with an attractive ribbed pattern and likely hails from Europe c 1800 - 1840.

The base features a semi-ground pontil, ample shelf ware and shows extra grinding in order to flatten the base. Given it’s oversized nature we’d expect this to be used for large service engagements (dinner parties!) and/or for short term storage.

The glass body is squat, the spout and rim are rudimentary and the entire form is full of random bubbles from the blowing process. This was intended as a functional piece rather than a work of art and thus the glassblower’s hand…and early process… are evident

Why We Love It: This bottle is as old as it is elegant. We love anything hand blown in clear glass and while this can hold way more wine than anyone should drink at a dinner party, we like it as a floor vase or exuberant centerpiece.

Condition: Some calcification / accumulation to the interior and shelfware to the base. Otherwise perfect.

Dims: 19” Tall x 12” diameter

Location: Sperryville, VA
