Danish Kubbestol

$895.00

About: This is a curvaceous staved oak Kubbestol hailing from Denmark c.1890-1920. It’s constructed of solid oak staves (think barrel construction) and embellished with chip carved surfaces retaining its original ruddy niger leather seat with brass nailhead trim. The rear of the chair is pierced with a sweet little carved heart leading us to believe it was given as a wedding gift.

The tradition of the Kubbestol comes from Norway. Tree trunks are hollowed out and turned into chairs, often times given as wedding gifts. The tradition expanded across Scandinavia over the ages with each country expressing their own version of the craft. In Denmark the Kubbestol often comes in staved versions of which this example is.

Why We Love It: Come on, seriously? This is amazing!! Tens all around: patina, original leather, scale proportion. An incredible example of the evolution of a traditional Scandinavian craft.

Condition: Excellent patina showing very little wear & tear. The red leather seat is delicate but shows no holes or tears. The lower vine banding has a creak / break with repair.

Dims: 37.5” Back Height, 19” Seat Height, 21” Diameter

Location: Sperryville, VA

Shipping Note: Please contact us for a delivery quote.
